Installing the Omnis Client Software ==================================== Here are some notes to get you started with the SCT production database Omnis client. There is more information about using the database on my web pages (see below). Good luck! Joe Foster 1. Omnis Software v2.4 ------------------ Installing Omnis runtime software is not too difficult. Find the folder for your operating system and run the installer: 'SetupXXr.exe', where 'XX' is one of '95', '98', 'NT'. This will create a folder somewhere (you can choose) called 'OMNIS24'. Also in the folder is a file called 'Userpic.df1'. This should replace the file of the same name in folder OMNIS24/Icons. 2. Oracle SQL*Net ------------------ In order to connect to the master server in Geneva you need some licenced software from Oracle. It used to be called 'SQL*Net', but now they seem to call it 'Oracle8 Client' software or 'Net8'. There is a list of Oracle addresses on my WWW page. The cost is about GBP 300. See 'SQLnet.txt' for instructions on configuring SQL*Net/Net8. 3. SCT_DB library and datafile updates --------------------------------------- You can always download the latest SCT DataBase library and datafile from my web page at http://www.hep.man.ac.uk/groups/atlas/SCTdatabase/Database.html Follow 'Updates to the Omnis Application' to get to the link to the download file. Unzip SCT_DBn_nn.zip, and read 'Updating.txt', for further instructions. 4. Serial Number ----------------- The first time you run the program called 'OMNIS24\Omnis.exe', you will be prompted for your name, organisation and serial number. I will give you a serial number, if you don't already have one. 5. Running the database ------------------------ Once Omnis.exe has been serialised a window called 'OMNIS Studio' opens. Pull down the 'File' menu there and select 'Open Library...'. At the bottom of the dialog window that opens then is a 'Files of Type' menu, where you should select 'OMNIS Libraries (*.lbr)'. When you have done that, you should see 'sct_db5_43.lbr' among the files listed. Select this. Now the SCT_DB library starts, and first asks you for a password to define your user level. There are three user levels: (1) for modifying definitions of item types, assemblies, etc. Not for general use. (2) for general data entry (Password = 'numberful'). (3) for read-only access (Password = ''). If you are running the library for the first time, you will be prompted to select your institute from a list. There is a pause while lists are initialised, then you are prompted for a local password. You get this from me, and it will only work at your institute. It is case sensitive. Once you have entered a correct passwords, the OMNIS Studio window mounts three new menus at the top: 'Reports', 'Tables', 'Sessions'. You use these for most of the normal functions of the database. 6. Downloading the datafile --------------------------- There is only a skeleton datafile provided with this distribution. Once you have installed and configured SQL*Net and logged on at user level (2), the startup routine automatically populates your local datafile from the Master Server. If this fails for any reason, you can do it yourself. Under the 'Sessions' menu, select 'Merge Databases / Master --> Local'. This should fetch all of the data in the correct order from the master server. It could take some time. At the end of the process, look at the logfile 'MergeLog.txt' for any error messages. If the download was interrupted for some reason, just try again. If you get errors, please let me know. 7. 'Who Am I?' -------------- The database records your initials in each Items or Tests record you enter. If you tell it who you are, you won't have to keep entering your own initials for every new record. The 'Who Am I?' window opens every time you logon. If the name and initials are not your own, click on the 'Change' button, select your name from the list, and hit 'OK'. If your name does not appear in the list, close the 'Who Am I?' window, pull down the 'Tables' menu and select 'People'. Insert an entry for yourself, choosing a new set of initials with between two and four characters. Make sure your new record gets sent to the master database by selecting the Sessions/Merge Databases/Local-->Master menu item. Then try Sessions/Who Am I? again. Please tell me of any problems of suggestions for improvement you have. Good luck, Joe Foster (Joe.Foster@man.ac.uk)
