Val O'Shea works in the Particle Physics Experimental group at the University of Glasgow. His primary interest is in the development of radiation detector systems for applications in high energy physics. He is currently working on operation and build of detector systems for experimental facilities based at CERN (ATLAS) and DESY (XFEL).

He has been responsible for the design and build of detector systems for ZEUS (DESY), Aleph and ATLAS (both at CERN) over the last 20 years as well as building up the Medipix activity from its inception. He has also been active in various generic detector research programmes ranging from M-I3 (Basic Technology) to co-ordinating the 3D-RID EU FP5 funded development of so-called 3-D detector structures.

He leads the Glasgow detector development effort which focuses on novel detection techniques using semiconductor sensors and leverages on the availability of state of the art semiconductor fabrication facilities available at the James Watt NanoFabrication Centre.

Most recently, following the successful installation and commissioning of the ATLAS SCT (62 square metres of silicon detectors), he has started to study the detector system requirements necessary to enable an upgraded detector system to function after an order of magnitude increase in luminosity at the SLHC.
