Wireless Network Name (SSID) Change
On Tuesday January 9th, 2007 between 6:00am and 7:00am, the Laboratory’s general wireless network will be reconfigured to advertise itself under a new name (SSID), fgz. Currently, the Laboratory’s wireless network is advertised under the name tsunami. Starting Tuesday morning, the tsunami wireless network will no longer be available, and wireless users should select the fgz network for general site access.
Wireless LAN support at the Laboratory is provided by approximately 200 wireless access points that are located throughout the site. As those access points are individually reconfigured on Tuesday morning, any existing wireless connections will be lost. Users should be able to reestablish their wireless connectivity by selecting the new fgz network from their list of available wireless networks. Linux users may need to use their system configuration utility to add the fgz SSID to their system’s wireless network configuration.
The change in the default wireless network SSID is an initial step toward enhancing the security of the Laboratory’s wireless network service. In the future, multiple Laboratory wireless networks will be advertised, offering differing levels of authentication and encryption. These enhancements are scheduled to be implemented in the first half of 2007.

Users encountering problems with their wireless access should report their problem to their local Desktop Administrator.
